My favorite date spot with my wife is anywhere where we are alone and without our kids (no offense kids). I love taking her to a local quiet restaurant to share conversation with, then going to a movie where we can just be quiet and enjoy sitting next to each other.
I can second that. When you have kids, the smaller, quiet moments (even if you’re just sitting and enjoying each other’s company without words) are the moments that seem the most memorable and impacting.
I have been really digging La Capitale in downtown Salem. Great food. Romantic atmosphere. Fair prices. Plus the owner uses Twitter. Gotta love that!

A few years ago, my wife told me she wanted to go to Ireland someday. At the time, we were very poor and in ministry (need I say more). I quickly got on the internet and did a search for unique Irish places in the western suburbs of Chicago. That is when I ran across an authentic Irish Pub in St. Charles, IL called McNally’s. This place is the real deal…so real they imported the entire inside of the place directly from Ireland (it came by ship) – including the wait staff (accents, red hair, and all!) I thought that would be a nice surprise in itself. But when we arrived, the place was packed. We were seated in a beautiful hand carved booth with great ambiance. The music seemed almost too good for speakers, and then we found there was a traditional irish pub band playing upstairs (with cloggers and all). It was amazing. Our waitress had inquired if we were on a date – which I was quick to point out that I took my wife to Ireland, in which she said, “The closest place to the homeland on this side o’the Atlantic.” Then she asked if we wanted to make the night even better (could it get any better). Just a couple doors down was an old theater, and tonight only, there was an organ (one of those beautiful ones that come out of the floor and turn around) concert before the movie. The organist played all romantic songs that night. We were so caught up with the excitement of the night – we didn’t even care what movie, but that too was a bonus. The movie was “I am Sam.” With tears in our eyes, holding each other’s hands we exited the theater, stopped into a coffee shop and shared a warm beverage and talked the night away. Simple, Irish, Romantic and one neither of us will forget.
Wow. Bob, that’s a tough one to beat. Simply amazing.
So, since my husband posted a comment earlier(Anthony, I do have to second the “no kids” scenario. Our children are “romance killers!” =)
I do believe we have had many romantic moments over our 14 years together. A very fond memory I have was one year when we went to Bend for our anniversary and went fly fishing on the Deschutes River… We were eaten alive by mosquitos, and didn’t catch any fish, but it was a wonderful time together! Or the time we camped in the Redwoods on our way to San Francisco, in a tent, in the rain, all the while being scared of being mauled by Bigfoot!
Ah… Memories…
My story is not one about romance. Instead it is a reminder to remember the single ladies (daughters, sisters, friends) in your life on Valentine’s Day!
Being a single lady during Valentine’s day can really be difficult sometimes. I knew someday I’d have someone to spoil me… but until then, it was a little depressing and lonely to see other girls getting flowers and chocolates and jewelry, etc.
Well, one year, my younger brother decided to surprise me and send a half dozen beautiful roses in my favorite color delivered to my door! I was so surprised and it made me feel very special and loved. I knew that while I was waiting for God to bring me that special man, there was still people in my life who wanted to express to me that I’m loved and treasured. That really meant a lot.
So, just a reminder to those of you who have single ladies in your life: Please do something special for them on Valentine’s Day to show them they are loved and treasured!
Thanks for the reminder MJ!
One Valentine’s Day, we really had no money to go out for a fancy meal, so my husband and I agreed to not spend any money on each other. My husband made me a delicious meal of shrimp scampi and we ate alone, no kids, by the fireplace. He wrote me a poem for Valentine’s Day. Now that may not seem like a big deal to you, but my husband is quite the conservative geek type. It took a lot of courage for him to write a poem. Then he told me that he thanks God for me everyday. I was blown away. Really, I’m no prize. I couldn’t believe that he would thank God for ME. That was the most meaningful and precious Valentine’s Day ever. : )
I dig it. Great story Ellen.
A true favorite is hard to pin point. Any date with my husband is my favorite spot to be. I have to say I will always love Rositas near Green Lake in Seattle, since it was the first dinner date we had. Then you can walk around the lake together after eating scrumptious homemade tortillas!
We also like going on breakfast dates…Endolyne Joes in West Seattle is great for breakfast and close to Lincoln Park where you can take a nice stroll on the beautiful beach after eating.
